Don Quixote

“The story that never ends”

-“It came to pass,- said Sancho- that the shepherd put in practice his determination and, giving priority to his goats, he routed towards the fields of Estremadura, to fade for the kingdoms of Portugal. Torralba, who knew about this, came after him, and followed at the same pace and barefoot from afar, with a pilgrim ‘staff on the hand, and saddlebags round his neck. There he had a piece of mirror and a piece of comb and I don’t know what kind of bottles of makeup for the face; whatever he had, I don’t want to know more about it, I just said that they said  that the shepherd arrived with his goats to cross the Guadiana’s river. The river had a surge tide, almost spreading out of his regular bank; however, on the part where the shepherd came, there was no boat nor ship, nor could anybody get him and his goats to the other side. He was very angry because he saw that Torralba was very close to him so, he did not want to get annoyed with all of her whipping a begging; moreover he was looking, that he saw a fisher who had a boat next to him, very small one, it had just enough space for a goat and a person. They talk and he agreed with him that he could cross him along with his three hundred goats. The fisher came into the boat and cross with one goat, then he did it again, he turned around and he proceeded to did this all over again”. Have you mercy in mind the number of the goats that the fisher is crossing, because if you lost one, the story it is over and it could not be possible said more about it. “I’m proceed, well, the other side was completely with the sludge and slippery, the fisher take many time to go and came back. However, he came back over and over again”.

-Imagine that he crossed all of the goats- said Don Quixote-, do not go and turn around in this way, you will never finished even in a year.

-How many goat had crossed until now? - asked Sancho

-What am I going to know? –answered Quixote.

-Here is what I said: keep in mind the numbers. For God, the story is over; there is no way to continue.

-How could it be possible? – Don Quixote answered-. It is very special to know how many goats were on the other side, that if I forgot the number, could you not continue with the story?

- No sir, no way- Sancho answered-; because just like I asked you to our mercy how many goats was crossed, and he answered that he don’t know,  at this moment I forgot how many I had to said, it is certain that he was very virtuous and a happy person.

- Thereby- said Don Quixote - Is the story finished?

-As finished as my mother is- said Sancho.
